February 2015, LaMama Theatre. About the Ukraine refugee crisis and war. Virlana Tkacz, director

Shakespeare's Sisters

January 2017, Dixon Place. Mara takes on Shakespeare as her alter ego to write herself out of the mental asylum.

It’s an admirable undertaking, and the audience relocation scene and one in which a woman is accosted by soldiers are potent.[...] Marina Celander, as a refugee, and Sean Eden, as a builder who speaks about his projects in Ukraine, are fine actors, and Julian Kytasty’s bandura music fosters an aura of menace."

Hildegard (Vision)

December 2015, LaMama Theatre. Medieval nun Hildegard von Bingen and her struggle with visions and society's restrictions

"The tireless Marina Celander, as the Narrator, speaks all the dialogue; the other actors express only the occasional battle cry preceding a sword thrust."

NY Times on Deadly She Wolf

"It is told, like the first installment, in narration written by Mr. Ho and Ruth Margraff that was delivered with melodramatic relish by an elegantly costumed narrator (Marina Celander); it was directed by Terry O'Reilly. The narrator shifted between high-flown storytelling and slangy retold dialogue, with glints of humor, while the martial artists rocketed across the stage."

NY Times on Shaolin Secret Stories

Deadly She Wolf Assassin at Armageddon!

May 2013, LaMama Theatre. Fred Ho/Ruth Margraff. Sonoko Kawahara, director.

Women of the Scarred Earth

March 2008, Univ of Wisconsin. Peggy Choy, choreographer.

VOD II: Shaolin Secret Stories

Feb 2004, Apollo Theatre, NYC. Fred Ho/Ruth Margraff. Terry O'Reilly, director

"The first stroke of genius lies in the use of disturbingly talented Marina Celander as The Narrator for all characters. Presenting the inner thoughts and speeches of each character in this way mimics the dramatic style of an animated show. Celander’s virtuosity is disturbing because of her range: she conveys the snakelike hiss of evil mastermind Iyagu (pronounced Iago, of course, and gleefully played by Perry Yung) with equal alacrity as the plaintively innocent Boy who represents the bright hope of the future in a world populated by highly-skilled cold-blooded killers."
