Marina Celander bio:

Marina Celander is a theatre artist, singer, dancer, living and working in NYC. She studied dance at London Contemporary Dance School, England, and theatre at the Gene Frankel Theatre Workshop, NYC, and has performed in both dance and theatre nationally and internationally.

Marina received the Pan Asian Repertory Theatre’s annual Red Socks Award for her contribution to Asian American threatre in 2014. In 2016 Marina was invited to perform her solo show MERMAID'S HOWL at the Stockholm Fringe Festival, and was nominated for the Stockholm Fringe Innovation In Performance Award. She then was invited to perform this show at the Tony award-winning theatre LaMama ETC in Feb 2018 as part of their solo festival Series Of One, curated by Nicky Paraiso. 

Her solo show Shakespeare's Sisters was first performed at Dixon Place 2017, and she was later invited to perform the same show at the Estrogenius Festival in NYC in March 2019.

She was seen in Fred Ho/Ruth Margraff’s Deadly She Wolf Assassin at Armageddon at LaMama Theatre, to glowing reviews. Her working relationship with the composer, writer and activist Fred Ho span many theatrical productions over two decades.

She portrayed the medieval nun Hildegard von Bingen in Pioneers Go East Collective’s production Hildegard (Vision), LaMama. Other notable directors and creators are Ellen Stewart, Theodora Skipitares, Christine Sang. 

Marina has performed with Yara Arts Group for the past 18 years in Ukraine and in New York. 

She was a proud participant in Indigenous Dance Forum 2016 (A/P/A New York University), and Culmination 2017 (iMovingLab), choreographed by renown Māori dance maker Jack Gray, artistic director of Atamira Dance Company in Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Most recently she toured with Afro Yaqui Music Collective in their multi disciplinary jazz opera MIRROR BUTTERFLY: THE MIGRANT LIBERATION MOVEMENT SUITE, performing in Pittsburgh, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

Marina has been a Hula student since 2000, and has had the pleasure and honor of studying under, and taking workshops with, the most notable and respected Kumu Hula.
